Highstreet Holiday Hints

Horray for the highstreet! Horray I say! If you're going beachside for your holliers this summer here are some top tips from I Blog's shopping travels...

Asos.com:
Beach playsuits €27.50 -this season's alternative to the (yawn!) sarong.
Crop bandeau tops €7.50 - perfect when paired with a maxi skirt.

Dunnes:
Flip flops only €1. Customise with jewel pieces or add a corsage pin to disguise ugly toes.
Mix-n-match bikinis from €5. Whatever your shape, get the bikini that will fit your bits. Yay!

H&M:
Gorgeous acid orange trapezes dresses at €24.95. A great tan is the only accessory you'll need!
Beach cover tops and multi-colour shades from €3.95.

Miss Selfridge:
Strappy maxi dresses €27. Perfect palette on which to build - add a belt, denim gilet, mega-watt jewellery - whatever takes your fancy.

Penneys:
Amazing beads from €3. Layer up for a bright tribal look.
Bikini sets from €5. Every shape, size and colour - and decent quality
Leather weave belts €4. Beat that!

River Island:

Love love love! Spoil yourself with some beach couture.
Couture swimwear - mix and match sets from €17.50 a piece featuring Betty Paige inspired high-waist shorts for jelly bellies. Nice.
Bollywood-inspired gold thread cover-ups @ €33.50 - it's a skirt, it's a turban, it's a top - it's fabulous!

If It's Good Enough for Cleopatra...

My very wise stylist friend Claire once revealed a clever tip for removing fake tan. Milk. The lactic acid acts a natural exfoliant by helping lift dead cells; while the fat binds moisture, keeping the skin soft. Sounds like urban legend? Try it. Just add a litre into a very hot bath and soak for 20 minutes. Afterwards, use a washcloth to slough the skin and be staggered by the results. I've been using top drawer exfoliants in a bid to fade tan remanents without half the success of plain 'aul bainne. Apparently Cleopatra was onto a good thing.

Note: sounds silly but apparently this tip isn't the safest if you're lactose intolerant or have high blood pressure.

And finally some more; apologies for all of the eBay posting. I'll get on with some more worthy posting soon!
Be sure to check out the Button up Shirt, I personally love it and think it's very Alexa Chung. Think her Philip Lim shirt meets the Miu Miu collars with gem buttons and little teardrop details on the collar. Lovely!

And so the wardrobe clear our continues with three new items for sale in my eBay store. Simple american apparel vest, pretty peony print dress, oversized pearl embroidered tee.

I must say this whole clearing out process is very cleansing. Naturally there are those niggling 'Oh, but I may wear it in the future' moments but the 'fuck it, I need money' approach prevails. And it just seems healthy to keep things circulating. When Joanna and I were in America we met this guy from the Czech Republic who had sold his car and most of his possessions to fund his traveling. And many of the people we stayed with just didn't have many possessions as they wanted to have the freedom to easily up and leave without material items getting in their way. Of course much easier in theory than in practice but inspiring all the same.

More items to be added over the weekend including a rather fetching Alexa-esque button up shirt.

The Fall 2010 Arabella Ramsay collection is like a visual checklist of all I'm craving where wardrobe additions are concerned. We're in that awkward limbo stage; outside summer has finally reared it's beautiful sunny glare yet all I want to wear are autumn appropriate suedes, leathers and the kind of dresses that when worn in hot temperatures ought to come with a sweatpatch warning. This collection really is fantastic but given my (usual) financial and this time geographical restrictions (Arabella Ramsay is only stocked Down Under) it will have to serve only as inspiration on my trips to the charity shops.

I think it's fair to say that the lack of a Monki or Weekday online store leaves many of us feeling a little empty inside. It would explain those days when you can never focus-instead drifting aimlessly or nights when you can't sleep. With this in mind after stumbling across
Modekungen.se I practically felt like I'd found religion. Scalloped shorts, duffle parkas and arrays of Monki style jersey from a fellow Swedish outfitter? They also sell tee shirts with lovely portrait graphic designs and stock a nice selection of trousers and weekend bags for guys.

The fact that on top of all of this
truly makes my heart sing is that they ship internationally! (And at not too high a price might I add.) Go forth, go forth and buy!

ps, did anyone squeal as much as I did upon seeing the scallop edged shorts? If I could somehow engineer them out of a brown suede or leather god knows I would.

EDIT: I'm sorry to have to break the news to you but the duffle coat has sold out! It was still in stock in the 'old products' sale section (the best thing about it was the price!) but now it's gone. I'm as disappointed as you are..

I Love Motel??

I got this complimentary t-shirt today from a new fashion brand called Motel. Very sweet but I'm somewhat reticent to wear it; not least because it comes with its own matching keyring and bag. A bit like saying 'Line up fellas. I'm open for business!' Unless, of course, you happen to harbour a fondness for temporary accommodation. Let's face it, hipster irony isn't a good look on a gal my age. Guess I'll have to wear this one to bed - preferably in my own house; not a motel.

I'm having a bit of a wardrobe overhaul so everything that realistically I no longer wear is headed to eBay! I've just listed some items but more are coming.

If you're impartial to Topshop brogues and 70's style secretary blouses among other things take a look. I'm shipped internationally too but worldwide postage prices haven't been included as prices will depend. Drop me a line either through ebay/email/or here if you don't live in the UK and would like to know more.

Toe Woes

I hate my toes. Fact. I spent many a year pretending to be a size 7 when really I'm an 8. Yet another fact. Given my unfortunate digital inheritance and years of denial, I am not privy to use of the term 'flip flop'. This is a source of great anxiety for me every summer. A few years ago I went to Greece and was told by a complete stranger that something could be done about my toes. She went so far as to recommend Harley Street. I spent the rest of that holiday knee-deep in sand. With my Spanish break a mere three weeks away, I've been desperate to find sandals that can double up as a cunning toe disguise. Thus far, I found a sequin panelled pair in Zara for €49.95 and this little beauty to my right on Asos.com for €43.75. They haven't arrived yet so I'm still dubious as to whether the fringe is long enough to disguise the offending piggies. I fear I may have to resort to some D.I.Y. tactics - a sandal brooch perhaps?

back home to read in the garden, have lunch from the leftovers of homemade mexican I made last night.
and really I should call my old manager at Topshop and talk about coming back. being unemployed it too much fun..

Heaven Hair & Beauty

D12 isn't just a hip hop group folks. It's also an up-and-coming postcode, not merely because it lays claim to resident Martin Foley (a.k.a. The Viper). It's new salon - Heaven Hair & Beauty - looks set to have punters boarding the 19a to sample some of their killer deals. Take their 3-week manicure which at €28, trumps the rather elevated €70 fee at one particular Dublin hair salon. What about their Vita Liberatea organic spray tan? The results are sweet - no biscuit smell, no questionable brown transfers on white clothing and at €30, it fades like a sweet summer romance. To cap it all off, they've got a banging deal on at the mo: €50 for a Brazilian, half leg, underarm and eyebrow wax.

Maxi Blues

I love my maxi dresses - all 6 of them which is why I thought I'd make it lucky number 7 with this floral full-length frock from A|wear. This strapless number is all sorts of lovely - namely because it does not make me look like I'm escaping a flood. At six foot tall, most maxis just look sort of midi on me, especially if paired with wedges. So you can imagine my excitement when I found one that did what it said on the tin. Except....I had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction. Unused to the extra length, I trod on the hem in a Grafton Street shop only to expose my rather naff strapless bra. Thankfully, I was wearing one. Small graces and all that. My new mantra is 'lift before thy boobs separate.'

Usually I'm perfectly happy moseying about on my own. I'm the type of person that prefers a solo shopping trip and I enjoy having the house to myself so that I may potter about safe in the knowledge that I can coordinate mealtimes to my liking and read the papers in my knickers if I so desire. However since getting back from America I've been socially immersing myself and have been filled with a feeling I can't quite put my finger on so that when I'm alone I don't quite feel content. It's most out of character but in a way it's nice because it's meant I've been spending lots of time with my friends. Pretty much everyday has been spent by the waterfront outside the local arts centre where handsome men congregate on their bikes and friends dangle their feet by the water edge.

Yesterday was no exception and with a whole day ahead of me and no plans I called Josh to see if he wanted to hang out. We sat in the sun watching girls wash the roof of their canal boat, chatting and having a vague flick through the papers. I'd bought a bottle of homemade sweet tea with me and took some photos on the Olympus XA2 that he's lent me, occasionally asking stupidly obvious questions about film.

So a lovely day all in all and then I headed down the train station where the
University of the West of England was putting on it's Graduate show. Fellow blogger (and Celine enthusiast) Charlie May was showing so I took myself off in my new suede jacket (which despite the current heatwave I refuse to take off) to coo over the mini collections that had been put together.

oh hello. It's Saturday night. rather collectively and democratically my friends and I bailed on our plans so i've been saving money and dicking about at home.

which means stroking cats, belly laughing at Have I Got News For You and The Ricky Gervais Show, lazily eating an omelette for tea and reaquainting myself with the camera for some much needed outfit posts. earlier this evening I went to the UWE Graduate Fashion Show which was rather fantastic but steady on steeds, more about that later.
