Modern Vintage

I popped into Oxfam Vintage the other day on George's Street for a bit of a goo. Low and behold, I found this gorgeous floral number with pussy bow detail - quite the box ticker, eh? I'm not really a pink kinda gal but the knife pleats create a more structured look and there are lovely cameo hues of dove grey and fuchsia that make it less girlie girlie. It has to be said, this iPhone pic doesn't do it quite the justice it deserves, especially since I snagged it for a whopping €10. Bargain! Nice one...

Man Flu Musings

I've been struck down with a serious case of Man Flu. The much derided and seemingly apocryphal ailment germane to the Y chromosome has infiltrated my world. Think raw nose, battery sneezing and enough antibacterial gel to sterilize a Jersey Shore smush room. (Sorry Snooki...) In fact, I'm feeling so sorry for myself, I could probably write a Country and Western song. Instead, I raided the guest room where I keep my second wardrobe and started creating new looks for 2011. I'm thinking of those Grace Jones razor edges for some East Coast preppy. Could this be the psychoactive delusions of a Lempsip and Ibuprofen cocktail? Give it another 48 hours and we'll see...

Dirty Fabulous

A big thanks to vintage ateliers Dirty Fabulous for loaning me this fabulous 1940s clutch bag for the Hennessy Gold Cup. If you haven't paid a visit to the Georgian haunt yet, make an appointment or pop in on one of their open days and check out the retro goodies. The prices are exceptional given the quality and age of the garments. You'll walk in like an excited child and walk out like you stepped off the set of Pearl Harbour. A total treat! Check out the goods @ www.dirtyfabulous.com.

eBay Fun!

Interested in buying a vintage dress...or three? I'm flogging some of my prized clobber on eBay - mainly that which I bought in a magpie frenzy. The end result? Clothes that don't quite fit. So very pretty though; like this fab 70s dress. On my six foot frame, the hem hits my ankle bone so sadly its too short with heels. I also need someone to zip me up as I suck inhale like a corseted Scarlett O'Hara. The late night snacking has to stop...seriously.

Velvet Musings

Velvet. It's back. (Cue: fulsome hurrah!) In honour of the tactile textile and its timely return, I've pulled this vintage relic from the back of my closet. It's a €20 dress from way way back (whenever I bought it). Kind of reminds me of Alena Akhmadullina with its peacock blue and paisley print. Paired with some Lady Gaga-inspired boots, it could easily transition into some winter evening chic. Winter. Sorry. That's back too...

Dirty Fabulous Open Day

Vintage vixens take note. Dublin's retro atelier - Dirty Fabulous - is having an open day on Saturday the 4th of July to celebrate all things American! If you fancy playing dress up in cloche hats, pencil skirts and lace gloves, then get down to their Baggot Street HQ for a goo. They're even laying on the cookies and cupcakes and some sweet special offers. Swell!

Last Chance @ Second Chance

My fave little vintage haunt - Second Chance is on its last legs. Yes indeedy, the big 'R' is forcing it to close shop. This quirky equestrian shirt at €15 is the last bargain-ola I managed to score. Look closely at the gold buttons and horse brass motifs. V Aggy Deyn. Paired with a white tee, my gold vintage chains, bronze peep toes and skinny jeans and BAM! - some serious turf-tastic chic. Only a couple of days left and still some 80s Guy Laroche left. Get there before its gone!

The Goddess Room

I better be karmically compensated for sharing my vintage finds with the world. Everytime I open my well-intentioned mouth, a 'gotta wait til payday' dress finds a new home - i.e. not mine. Nonetheless, I feel behoved to dish on The Goddess Room - Temple Bar's newest (a bare week old!) retro atelier. Owner Marie Therese Duggan sources threads based on the latest trends from 70s jumpsuits to 80s disco dresses and this gorgeous uber-femme chiffon delight. She's even got an online shop for those who live further afield. Hurry though. Once she is previewed on Xpose this Monday, methinks there won't be much left!

Vintage Couture Auction

There are two words every would-be bidder longs to hear at an auction - 'no reserve'. Add to this the words - 'everything must go' and you've got a recipe for something special, especially when the goods in question happen to be vintage couture. That's right. If you life for Lanvin and dream about bagging a Birkin, get thyself over to Adam's Auctioneers tomorrow at 1pm for the fashion auction bar none. 435 pieces of designer threads from the wardrobe of the late socialite Anne Bullitt will all go under the hammer in aid of Crumlin Street Children's Hospital. Miss it at your peril. For more information, check out my article in today's Irish Examiner Weekend supplement. Yep, that's me on the cover with the pleading 'please can I keep it' look on my face!

D-Aungier Street!

You see! This is what happens when I walk down Aungier Street these days. I wind up shopping! Although I'm very impressed with Pucci-esque maxi coat from Second Chance, I'm getting increasingly worried about my size zero bank balance. Having said that, this beauty was only €65 and will look perfect with skinny jeans and heels when spring has actually sprung. Until then I shall keep a fervent eye on the BBC 5-day forecast. Surely this snow will end soon. Sigh...

Willpower...Where Art Thou Willpower?

Arse. Not even a fortnight into the new year and I've broken one of my resolutions...twice. Looks like the 'thou shalt not buy another vintage dress until you've saved enough for a pair of Louey B's' rule has fallen foul of my love for the oldies. My first indiscretion happened only two days into 2009 with my second and most luscious cheat occuring online early this morning. It was a maxi dress. Long - 59" to be precise - and brown....very brown. Although it was a lot older than me (a 1960s original), I was unperturbed by public perception. I clicked urgently again and again until it was lodged safely in my cart. Sigh... Paired with my vintage sunnies and platforms I could channel Kate Jackson in a New York minute. Was it worth it? Always. Would I do it again? My cart always has room for a good vintage.

Hollywhirl

I hate secrets, mainly because I'm so crap at keeping them. Honesty prevents any cloak and dagger behaviour on my part - especially if the cloak in question is Ferragamo cashmere and cost only $449! So in the spirit of community, I feel morally obliged to share the deets on my latest must-click find - Hollywhirl. Hollywhirl is an online online boutique selling previously owned designer, couture and vintage pieces in mint condition. Grab yourself a pair of Louey B's for $199, a vintage Fendi bag for $89 or even a pair of Chanel earrings for $199. I've been clicking 'Add to Cart' for the past two hours and my finger is sore so I'm prepared to hand someone else the gauntlet. Hey, I'm just that kind of gal!

Second Chances

Some things deserve second chances like Marmite, the Irish rugby team and as always ...vintage clothes. Despite having vowed not to buy any retro threads until I filled by Louboutin quota, I just couldn't resist. This 1970's beauty to my right comes courtesy of Dublin's newest vintage store - Second Chance. Nestled on the corner of Aungier Street, it boasts a pretty decent selection of clobber at killer prices. At only €19, I could be excused for indulging my little habit. Guess I'll have to give that new year resolution a second chance.

Crushing on Alterations

I've got a new crush - The Alterations Centre on Sth Anne Street (01 677 6258). Nestled above La Cave wine bar, this gaff is the biz for small nips and tucks or major satorial surgery. I recently bought in two of my prized vintage frocks - one for some hem work; the other for full-on inch reduction and both returned looking like fresh versions of their retro selves. If someone can explain why there's a sticker on the front door that says 'I Love Eamon' - I'd be really interested to know. Maybe Eamon works there and it's some major fan love. I love you too Eamon - you rock! Now bring on the Christmas parties!

Perk (You) Up Vintage!

Having a fat day? Broke yet again? Life just getting you down? Why not perk yourself up with a trip to Perk Up! Vintage. Nestled away in The Loft Market, Powerscourt, this little gem of retroness is an instant fix for fashion lovers. Trust me. I bought a gold 70's maxi dress there yesterday after having my heart pummelled like a freight train on crystal meth. The result? Sooooo cured? Who was that boy? Can't remember. I've been too busy for the past few hours practising my Studio 54 poses. "Le freak. C'est chic..." Fancy an online hit? CLICK HERE!

Vintage Giving

I'm beginning to feel a tad remoreseful about my self-gifting post. It is Christmas after all and I should rise above my beef with Santa. Thus in the spirit of giving, I'm giving you - my gentle readers - an insider tip on where to bag some retro swag. Enchanted Vintage is a killer Irish online vintage store that would make Dita Von Teese swoon with envy. This 1950s wiggle dress to my right is winging its way to Chez I Blog, along with a 1940s pumpkin number which I nabbed this weekend. CLICK HERE to check out the goods...and mighty good they are!
