Inside Style - Fierce or Feminine?

Inside Style by Annmarie O'Connor - as featured in The Dubliner magazine - July 24th

I never get chatted up. Some say it’s my height; others my myopic squint. I’m guessing it’s my wardrobe choices. To me, a pair of harem trousers and shoulder pads the size of tectonic plates signify style. My gay friend Andy tells me I could well be mistaken for the Queen of the Romulan Empire. Add in a coif and Vivienne Westwood knuckle duster and it’s a full-on Vulcan assault.

To him this is a compliment; and to be fair, I take no exception at being compared with royalty – intergalactic or otherwise.  That being said, this is the same man who once said of Lady Gaga “Real lack of effort; I get more dressed up to let the gas man in.” Enough said. It was time to tone it down.

I had a look through my wardrobe and saw a lot of: black, vertiginous heels, an assortment of leather, black again, Merle O’Grady spike rings, more black, ridiculously large bags that could easily double as a portal to an astral plane and further assorted items in...ahem...black. In fashion terms this qualifies as M-A-J-O-R (see: very well-dressed); in straight man speak I look angry, depressed or at best, funeral-ready.

Determined not to sell out in order to put out; I thought I’d test drive a new look rather than commit to a new colour scheme.  Pink seemed appropriate; floral seemed even better. How about a pink floral maxi dress? And some pretty beads? What about a pair of turquoise moccasins? Hey presto – I have a girlie side! The trick now was to pull it off with aplomb.

Within minutes of stepping out, I felt like a hybrid of Paris Hilton and Stevie Nicks. Luckily the fruit vendor on Coppinger Row seemed to approve as suggested by his wink and smile. An older man also stopped me on Grafton Street to tell me I looked lovely. Impressed, I continued my jaunt only to experience an abrupt end by stepping heedlessly on my hem and releasing a boob to the general public. Nice.

Embarrassed, I re-tucked and retreated. This would not have happened to a Romulan Queen.  Surely her Balmain-inspired armour would have occluded such an incident. “There’s a good reason why men love these floaty fabrics,” I thought.  Hmm. Maybe I’ll meet my  future Picard at an Ashish show? Seems the more likely bet.

Inside Style - Summer Sales

Inside Style by Annmarie O'Connor - as featured in The Dubliner magazine - July 15th

Summer sales. There’s no dressing them up. Let’s face it; even Carlsberg wouldn’t bother making them. Much like unwanted house guests, they arrive with little fanfare, hang around for weeks and leave a trail of trodden clothes strewn in their wake.

No 5 a.m. queues; no punters fighting to be the first in the door; no paps waiting outside Brown Thomas to get that front page money shot - nada; zilch; zippo. The poor relation that is the summer sale must instead make do with trying to flog car crash clobber to the few sods that aren’t Balearic-bound or frolicking in an Oxegen mud slick. Not even a fairy light in sight (insert here).

Unlike the thrill of bagging a pair of half price Prada boots in January; summer discounts bear the hallmark of scoring drunkenly in a club at the end of the night. It’s that compulsion to buy something simply because you’re there; only to cringe at that regrettable leopard print harem jumpsuit tucked away in the wardrobe. Beware unwitting shoppers: 2010 trends are no less traumatic. Clogs are a one-way ticket to the A&E; maxi dresses may hide a multitude but step on that hem and BAM – insta-boob flash! As for nudes: the less said, the better.

Indeed for every retail transgression, there are consequences. Only recently, I wore my floral Topshop wide-legged trousers to The Ryan Tubridy Show and managed to find the only cloud in the sky under which to get soaked. Who would’ve thought hems could act as an H2o conductor? Before I knew it; I was hiking reams of chiffon around my knees as I waddled to the nearest taxi rank. I felt like Cathy in Wuthering Heights emerging sodden on the heath - only minus Heathcliff; plus impending consumption. It was a lesson from the fashion god Nimbus – ‘thou shalt dress appropriately for the Irish weather’.

Can we be blamed though? Summer sales invariably toy with the Irish psyche. The hopes of securing a halfway decent summer are quickly untethered by remnant rails of a season that has yet to begin. It’s a bit like Armageddon. As the end is nigh approaching, so does a sense of urgency and the thought - ‘what if?’ What if the summer of ’95 befalls us again? If it did, would you be really be wearing a floral hotpants?

Inside Style - Knickergate

Inside Style by Annmarie O'Connor  - as featured in The Dubliner magazine - July 8th
I popped into Anewspace on Chatham Street to visit friend and owner Jonathan Lynn. “Hey 6 foot 1 Annmarie!” he cried; referring to my recent Facebook status update. Having recently gotten measured, I’ve since been dropkicked by the revelation that I am not 5 foot 11 and a half.  It was a total Florida moment,” I bemoaned. “I demand a recount.”  Convinced that I’m not descended from giraffes; and that my mother didn’t feed me fertiliser as a child, Jon proceeded to fill me in on a lesser known sartorial woe – The Irish Dilemma. “Take you for example,” he explained. “You don’t look that tall at first glance which means you’re short-legged.” Ta very much. Let’s hope he never uses this as a pick-up line.
With that I was quick to draw attention away from my meagre 32” legs; a tactic I would immediately regret. “Let’s play a game,” he says. “Show me your shoes.” I peeled back the edge of my maxi dress to reveal some love-worn military boots (hey, it was my day off). “I bet your wearing comfy underwear,” was the retort. Shocked yet somewhat impressed, I doled out the excuses thick and fast: my fancy pants are in the wash, I’m having a fat day; these ones bring me luck. Just how the hell did he guess? “Footwear is a dead giveaway. If a woman is going to take the time to put on a pencil skirt and heels; the safe knickers get shelved. “Look outside the door,” he urged. “Take a look at each lady’s shoes and make up your own mind.”
I had to admit it; he was right.  I was sporting a less than fetching pair of M&S boy shorts – the kind that wouldn’t get you laid in a Chelsea locker room.  Had I been teetering along in my vertiginous patent stilettos, the presence of a ‘ne’er do well’ thong would’ve been a sure bet. It’s official. The unwritten rule of wearing good underwear in the unlikely event of being struck by a car has been replaced by the more likely instance of a roving male eye.
What if I happened to be suspendered to the nines, only to be let down by my favourite pair of brogues?  Will I be forced to wear heels to avoid such assumptions? Great, now I’m going to be 6 foot 5.

cos because

I spent the day in London on Thursday with Ellis who had a nice wadge of birthday cash burning a hole in her pocket. Sadly I had a very meagre amount in comparrison but quite enjoyed shopping vicariously through her. Even if it meant having to leave this gorgeous dress behind at Cos. (£80 I believe, incase you're wondering). It felt quite SS10 Proenza Schouler with it's stretchy thick jersey fabric (almost Scuba-esque). As always I spent a great deal of my time wandering around Cos, stroking the woodwork and wishing I could live instore for the interiors. The day that they decide to sell online I will be a very happy bunny.
